Featured Friday: Jennifer Davis

Images: Jennifer Davis.

I can’t even remember when or how I came across Jennifer Davis’ art. It’s so special, I just had to share. Her use of texture and colour is really something else. I had the most difficult time choosing images for this blogpost, she’s made so much beautiful work. Just browsing through it, I feel totally inspired. Have a look for yourself by visiting her website, blog, Etsy shop and do read this wonderful interview: here. I really love how it shows the changes in her work over the years.
Have a great weekend!

Creatures with mushroom heads, foxes in clothes, cats… oh my gosh, I love it! The moment I saw this, I just wanted to show everyone. The Illustration Friday blog, where I discovered this artist, was sadly under construction when I made this post (their new website is looking really good though!), so I’ll just give you this direct link to the artists Tumblr (which is really amusing too): here. Curious what you think of this weeks pick…
Have an amazing weekend!

Featured Friday: Wieki Somers

Images: Wieki Somers

Another talented Dutch designer this week: Wieki Somers. She designed the Merry-go-round Coat Rack (photo: bottom right) for Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, who also have her Bathboat on permanent display. Other works include: Blossoms vase (top middle), Phantom wall decalls (available at Domestic) and Buffer lamps (shown here above the Bathboat). Those are definitely on the list. Well, maybe just one lamp. *sighs*
Have a look at this link: it’s about her ‘Frozen in time’ project (that black table!). So beautiful!
Have a great weekend everyone!

Featured Friday: Julian Callos

Los Angeles based artist Julian Callos’ work just made my jaw drop. The two images on the right are from his ‘The End’ exhibition. The detail and use of colour is so wonderful, I wish I could just cover my walls with it.
His work is varied in both style and subject matter: from doodles to sculpture and from cute to the downright dark. His portaits of ‘The Royal Tenenbaums‘ made me smile no end. He also shows amazing sketches of his work on his blog. Go have a look-see.
And also: have a great weekend!

Featured Friday: Pieke Bergmans

On this Featured Friday I want to introduce you to Dutch designer Pieke Bergmans’ work: Design virus. The photo’s above show her Light blubs and Crystal virus. She works with other materials too, but I just love what she does with glass: it looks so alive.
Don’t forget to look up her work on the ‘llove hotel’, really romantic! I couldn’t provide a direct link as it’s a pop-up screen, but you’ll find it on her website under ‘Work’.
Have a great weekend!
Update: Just found this link by DesignBoom about her room in the Tokyo llove hotel!

Featured Friday: Hideaki Kawashima

Wow. Just really wow. I can’t tell you how much I love this artist’s work.
I already retweeted this link by Daily Art Fixx 146 days ago (according to Twitter), but I didn’t do Featured fridays back then and if you weren’t on Twitter, you would have missed it anyway. And it’s soooo good!
Have a wonderful weekend everybody!

Featured Friday: Anka Zhuravleva’s Distorted gravity

I’m always intruiged by photographs of people suspended in mid air. Came across these photographs of Anka Zhuravleva, from her ‘Distorted gravity’ series. Of course I couldn’t help adding the one with the Sphynx cat in it… More to see on her website.
Have a great weekend, everyone!

Featured Friday: Illustration that makes me giggle

Images: Lizzy Stewart, Peter Harren and Gemma Correll.

You know when sometimes you just need a little pick-me-up? These illustrators so do that for me. They look at every day life and manage to find the humorous side of it:

Lizzy Stewart
Besides making really lovely illustrations, she also has a very dry sense of humor.
I can’t help but grin when looking at her diary drawings.
Visit her website, blog and Etsy shop.
Her new zine ‘Solo’ is out now! You can buy it (and others) here.

Peter Harren
What can I say? I laughed out loud the first time I saw his ‘Dance with no pants’ illustration…
Website, blog and Etsy shop.

Gemma Correll
She seems to be everywhere. Although, I only discovered her about a year ago, by this link my boyfriend sent me (apparently he thought it was appropiate; I just started drawing again and, well… This made me laugh at myself). I call her the Queen of Puns (she’s brilliant at making ‘bad’ puns).
If you can’t laugh at any of her drawings, there could be something seriously wrong (really, go see someone about that)…
Visit her website: her sketchbook‘s very funny. And her blog).

Bad Drawings of my daily life
is gathering quite a following on Twitter, and deservedly so. These drawings are sometimes sooo bad, yet sooo funny. They seem to be brightening up everyones day now.
Visit their Tumblr.
I also suggested a drawing once. This is what they came up with.

Well, I hope this weeks (belated) Featured Friday cheered up your day too. Have a good weekend!

Featured Friday: Thread

Images: Anne Lindberg, Gabriel Dawe, Sébastien Preschoux, Chiharu Shiota and Debbie Smyth

Normally I like to feature only one or two artists at a time on Featured Friday, but this week I decided on a theme as works by various artists caught my eye and I really wanted to share these particular ones with you. They do have one thing in common: they are all made with thread. Don’t expect any old cross-stitching here (not that there’s anything wrong with that!). Get prepared to be blown away:

This colourful installation by Anne Lindberg (via My Modern Met) absolutely bursts with movement. It looks so intangible, almost as if we are looking at a glimps of something from another dimension (or maybe I should just stop watching SCIFI).

Gabriel Dawe’s Plexus no 4 is just breathtaking. Like seeing a rainbow through the mist…

Sébastien Preschoux’ Nocturnes transforms the humble thread into spectacular searchlights at night.

Chiharu Shiota’s work may not be to everyones taste, but I absolutely adore it. This haunting work featured here on My Modern Met. Do check out the website.

And look how Debbie Smyth uses thread as a tool for drawing. I especially like her shaded works

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Featured Friday: Kate Boxer

Images: Kate boxer

Last monday evening I came across this blogpost on the Illustration Friday blog about Kate Boxer’s work (could’t wait for it to be Friday, so I could feature this too!). The image with the bunny caught my eye and I headed over to her website. At first I thought, well that’s a funny old website: no real navigation, no menu bar… But I started scrolling and soon I couldn’t stop and eventually I found myself looking at all of the images on her website. Have a look and do click on the images there to see a little more detail. Happy Friday everyone!
