I can’t even remember when or how I came across Jennifer Davis’ art. It’s so special, I just had to share. Her use of texture and colour is really something else. I had the most difficult time choosing images for this blogpost, she’s made so much beautiful work. Just browsing through it, I feel totally inspired. Featured Friday: Wieki Somers

Another talented Dutch designer this week: Wieki Somers. She designed the Merry-go-round Coat Rack (photo: bottom right) for Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, who also have her Bathboat on permanent display. Other works include: Blossoms vase (top middle), Phantom wall decalls (available at Domestic) and Buffer lamps (shown here above the Bathboat). Those are definitely on the list. Well, maybe just one lamp. *sighs*

Featured Friday: Julian Callos

Los Angeles based artist Julian Callos’ work just made my jaw drop. The two images on the right are from his ‘The End’ exhibition. The detail and use of colour is so wonderful, I wish I could just cover my walls with it.
His work is varied in both style and subject matter: from doodles to sculpture and from cute to the downright dark. His portaits of ‘The Royal Tenenbaums‘ made me smile no end. He also shows amazing sketches of his work on his blog. Go have a look-see.

On this Featured Friday I want to introduce you to Dutch designer Pieke Bergmans’ work: Design virus. The photo’s above show her Light blubs and Crystal virus. She works with other materials too, but I just love what she does with glass: it looks so alive.

You know when sometimes you just need a little pick-me-up? These illustrators so do that for me. They look at every day life and manage to find the humorous side of it:

Gemma Correll
She seems to be everywhere. Although, I only discovered her about a year ago, by this link my boyfriend sent me (apparently he thought it was appropiate; I just started drawing again and, well… This made me laugh at myself). I call her the Queen of Puns (she’s brilliant at making ‘bad’ puns).
If you can’t laugh at any of her drawings, there could be something seriously wrong (really, go see someone about that)…

is gathering quite a following on Twitter, and deservedly so. These drawings are sometimes sooo bad, yet sooo funny. They seem to be brightening up everyones day now.

Featured Friday: Thread

Normally I like to feature only one or two artists at a time on Featured Friday, but this week I decided on a theme as works by various artists caught my eye and I really wanted to share these particular ones with you. They do have one thing in common: they are all made with thread. Don’t expect any old cross-stitching here (not that there’s anything wrong with that!). Get prepared to be blown away:

This colourful installation by Anne Lindberg (via My Modern Met) absolutely bursts with movement. It looks so intangible, almost as if we are looking at a glimps of something from another dimension (or maybe I should just stop watching SCIFI).

Gabriel Dawe’s Plexus no 4 is just breathtaking. Like seeing a rainbow through the mist…

Sébastien Preschoux’ Nocturnes transforms the humble thread into spectacular searchlights at night.

Chiharu Shiota’s work may not be to everyones taste, but I absolutely adore it. This haunting work featured here on My Modern Met. Do check out the website.

And look how Debbie Smyth uses thread as a tool for drawing. I especially like her shaded works…

Last monday evening I came across this blogpost on the Illustration Friday blog about Kate Boxer’s work (could’t wait for it to be Friday, so I could feature this too!). The image with the bunny caught my eye and I headed over to her website. At first I thought, well that’s a funny old website: no real navigation, no menu bar… But I started scrolling and soon I couldn’t stop and eventually I found myself looking at all of the images on her website.
